Door Locks, Handles & Retrofitting
Compare keyed deadbolts, keypads, smart locks, levers, knobs and handlesets. Select a finish that works with your door: satin nickel, matte black, brass or bronze. Before buying, measure backset, bore diameter, door thickness, handing and handleset hole spacing. Reinforce the strike plate and test operation with the door open and closed. Double-cylinder deadbolts may violate egress rules: verify local requirements.

Editor's Corner: The door that wouldn't cooperate
I thought I was swapping a handle, not starting a remodeling project. Then the old trim came off, and the new hardware didn't cover the old holes. The backset was different, the strike didn't line up, and the paint underneath was another color entirely. My lesson: measure the bore, backset, door thickness and handleset spacing before shopping. Photograph the old setup, use the manufacturer's drilling template, and test the latch and deadbolt before declaring victory. A repair plate can help some doors; damaged or fire-rated doors may need professional attention.
Safety: Follow manufacturer instructions and local electrical, building, privacy and emergency-egress requirements. Hire a qualified professional when needed.
