Common over-the-counter items

Consider pain relievers, antihistamines, hydrocortisone cream, oral rehydration supplies and burn gel or dressings that make sense for your household. Check age restrictions, allergies, interactions and expiration dates before use.

Include information, not just supplies

Where to keep it

Store the kit somewhere dry, easy for adults to reach and known to everyone in the household. Keep medications and sharp items secured from children. A smaller duplicate kit in a vehicle, workshop or travel bag can also be useful.

Check it twice a year

Replace used items, expired medications, damaged packaging and depleted batteries. A simple spring-and-fall check keeps the kit ready without much effort.

Know when the kit is not enough

Severe bleeding, trouble breathing, chest pain, major burns, loss of consciousness, serious head injury, suspected poisoning or other life-threatening symptoms require emergency medical care rather than home treatment.

General educational information only and not medical advice. Follow product labels and professional guidance. For a serious or life-threatening emergency, contact emergency services.
