My Chimney Cleaning Adventure

I decided cleaning my chimney looked easy. Brush, chimney, done. Twenty minutes later, I looked like I had lost an argument with a bag of charcoal.

Apparently chimney soot does not politely fall downward. It travels. My face, shirt and hair were proof. Even better, I stepped outside just as the neighbors walked by. Their laughter suggested I had achieved a level of home maintenance they found deeply entertaining.

Still, chimney care matters. Soot and creosote can build up inside a flue, restricting airflow and increasing chimney-fire risk. Wood-burning fireplaces and chimneys should be inspected regularly and cleaned when needed.

The lesson? Pay attention to your chimney — but recognize when the job deserves a qualified chimney professional.

My fireplace ended up cleaner. The neighbors, unfortunately, now have a story.
