Travel & seasonal living

Before You Leave Home for Vacation — or for the Season

Use this as a starting point and adjust for your climate, length of absence, insurance requirements and whether anyone will be checking the property.

Outside

Good idea for longer absences: Give a trusted local person a key, alarm instructions and your contact information. Ask them to walk the property periodically and look for leaks, storm damage, power failures or forced entry.

When you return

Walk the exterior first, then check for unusual odors, water, temperature problems and tripped alarms before resuming normal systems. Restore water slowly if it was shut off and inspect visible plumbing while pressure returns.
